Universidad de Los Andes’ Master Plan of 1989 brought up the possibility of erecting a building at its southwest corner, an important spot located right next to the campus’ original entrance, marked by a narrow alleyway flanked by pine trees dating back to the early 20th Century.
The program of uses sought to implement office space, headquarters and student services, distributed throughout 4 stories. A program of this nature demands the necessary flexibility that will enable constant alterations in the arrangement of the interior spaces. Therefore, open typical floors of 39.5’ x 45.9’(12m x 14m) are proposed, with only four columns at their corners. Additionally, the walls below the window sills act as structural beams, able to handle such wide spans. As a result, the structure determines the building’s appearance, where the technical and functional factors go hand in hand.
Two significant elements complement the rectangular configuration of the proposed building: a semi-circular underground courtyard that brings eastern sunlight into a cellar, while also outlining the student traffic on the exterior; and a spiral staircase with a 4.8 m diameter that, along with the elevator, rises up in true lighthouse fashion, with an astronomical observatory dome at its top.
